Breaking News: Refs do what we say they do all the time. Stew with the hot take at 11. |

tell us again how games are not "influenced" by the ref's? |

Gotta manage the game to produce more interest, it was too boring otherwise.

This is something that any long-time fan of the sport has known. There have been too many examples of "even up" calls over the years to dismiss them as coincidence. I am not saying that every official does it in every game, but it's naive to think that this isn't a systemic issue.

Good! On top of this, refs have been horribly inconsistent this year. I hope this helps fix it |

Absolutely done by all Refs at NHL level, lets see how far the “journalists” who cover the league pursue this story. Who will ask Tim Peel if keeping penalties equal is mandated by league. My guess is this story will be buried by Friday, as all the NHL’s Broadcasting partners will tell their employees to let story die. |

The NHL is lucky that it was Gomer Pyle that got caught on mic, so it's easier to sweep under the rug as 'Peel being Peel'. |

This happens every game, difference is he got caught |

As I suspected for a long time, NHL officials manipulate the games and control the outcomes, And during the playoffs there are no rules and the officials swallow the whistle. |

firing one ref doesn't address the problem. I really doubt that the refs all got together years ago and decided to do this, it's likely part of the job and that's more worrisome. |

Maybe Mr. Peel writes a book one day. |

Penalties in hockey are like Holding in football
There are penalties ALL THE TIME if you go by the strict written rule of the rulebook but NOBODY wants to see a parade all night to the penalty box and 20 powerplays for each team
So the Referees manage the game, when one team starts leaning with more "infractions" then they get a penalty call against them, and it evens out the equilibrium
In other news, water is wet |

If they called the rule book to the letter there would be a people in the box all the time...During the game they can see the play and how the game is going and I would guess that they have discussions like that all the time..
This should be a non issue and everyone in the NHL making it an issue should be ashamed of themselves because everyone knows it happens. |

Is there a link to this transgression? |

I don't really agree. Players adjust to what gets called, plenty of examples of certain actions being significantly reduced because they always get called. When something only sometimes gets called then they'll take their chances. They also know that it depends where you are on the ice whether or not certain things get called. It's not a beer league, they know what they're doing.

Obviously not an isolated incident. Time to call all penalties and quit making up ones that don't exist. |

It is an issue. If the game is played with a guy in the box all night, then so be it. Coaches will figure it out. |

This just penalizes good teams that don’t take penalties, and rewards bad teams who take penalties, call everything, let cream rise to top, players will adapt

Maybe at the start. But long-term - no. The teams would know what WILL be called and players will be instructed properly.
No more cross-checks to the back of a player outside the crease.
No more "finishing the checks" two seconds after the puck is long gone. It's ridiculous this is currently allowed. Checking is to separate the player from the puck - not the head from the player.
Would be win-win long term if the rules were actually called.

I dont understand. Is it because he was on a hot mic? To think that Tim did this in a vacuum and no other refs do this is naïve. How many times have you heard "the even up call"? Or the "he hasnt earned that call yet". |

The 'loser point" and the "even up" call are 2 more examples of Bettman's way of gaining "parity" in the NHL.
